Above: Artist rendering of east facade panel series.

I’m currently commissioned by King County to create
create community-focused, large-scale permanent artwork for

their new 1.25-million-gallon stormwater facility along the Duwamish River in Seattle. Titled "Communities of Future-Past," the artwork honors five forms of the river-site over time: tidal-emergent, fir-terrace, settlement, industry, and infrastructure.
Through extensive community engagement—including neighborhood events, tribal conversations, and surveys asking residents to envision the future valley—the panels reveal intricate connections between water, land, livelihood, habitat, and community across generations. Designed to read at multiple scales for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers, the integrated artwork merges municipal function with timeFUL storytelling. Construction slated for 2026.

More information at West Duwamish Wet Weather Storage - King County, Washington.

The design and public outreach summary (below) was shared with the South Park Neighborhood Association in November 12, 2024.

TOTEM LAKE GATEWAY ART AND URBAN DISTRICT PUBLIC ART PLAN

Creation, outreach, and development of public art for a rapidly growing urban district in Kirkland, WA.

Details

Building on Kirkland’s 2018 Totem Lake Urban Enhancement Plan, Ann Marie worked with the City and community to develop public artwork and guidelines for five significant gateways with the goal of strengthening the identity of the rapidly developing urban district. Three concepts were developed with a vision of innovation and ‘dispersal’, where artworks are related yet unique to each site, inviting similarity without sameness and flexible responses to contexts. Two concepts were advanced based on positive public and City feedback:

“Innovation Triangle” is inspired by Totem Lake’s historic shingle mill and its role in the transformation of the local landscape, ecology, and economy. Mosaic patterns emerge from a traditional process of splitting timber into shingles overlaid with tree ring growth patterns. The resulting icon will inspire a suite of artwork that can respond to individual contexts and allow for site-specific variations.

“All That Glitters” capitalizes on the district’s existing monumental infrastructure, particularly the I-405 underpasses that divide the neighborhood, and proposes transforming them into welcoming corridors that also reflect their economic value. Several ideas for integrating the icon with luminescent materials, gold colors, and subtle lighting were outlined for initial discussions with WSDOT and the City.

On Equisetum (Horsetail):

This “weedy,” prehistoric, and architecturally intriguing plant has a tall tale to tell.

350 million years ago, horsetails (genus Equisetum) reached heights of 50-100 feet. These ancestors, called calamites, were a key species of the lush swamp forests that became coal deposits through milllennia of decomposition and alchemy. Ironically, these mammoth plants sequestered high levels of carbon from the atmosphere, creating an oxygen rich environment that could support humans. That same carbon is now being returned to the atmosphere by humans through the consumption of fossil fuel. Equisetum still exist today, though much smaller.

They are uniquely resilient
survivors—thriving in the disturbed, nutrient-poor soils created by
human settlement, quietly persisting as living links to our planet's
ancient past and unknown futures.

Weathered steel gates reveal the hidden geology and hydrology of Chatham University’s Sustainability Campus.

DetailsWorking with Mithun I created gate facades for the wastewater demonstration garden at Chatham University’s Eden Hall Sustainability Campus. Inspired by site research and the campus mission, I used local watershed and geologic data to visualize the site’s relationship to its greater ecological contexts. The south gates use nearby boring data to translate the sites’ unique underlying strata, such as the 300-million-year-old Pittsburgh Redbeds that are vulnerable to landslides. The north gate incorporates USGS stream reach data for the two watersheds straddled by the campus, which eventually drain to the Gulf of Mexico. The weathered steel patina will change over time, in concert with the transformation of the landscape.Role: Artist/designer and fabricator liaison within a collaborative interdisciplinary team.

1. Full scale weathered steel mockup with corresponding geologic section.2. North gate layout and overlaid mockup of reach codes and river names.3. Detail of wood mockup for north gates.4. Installed gates, image copyright Mithun.5. Detail of pattern created for back side of gates. 6. Wood mockup of one of three geologic gate panels.7. Two of the north gate panels installed. Image copyright of Mithun.

	FORCES OF NATURE

The earth is landscape over landscape. Geologic and anthropogenic structures are imagined and eroded into new landscapes. This work continues, more to come.

Cut paper and etched claybord.

Temporary public art installation of 1,200 custom digital LED fireflies that mimic the communication patterns of Photinus pyralis (a midwest native species). Installed in a 5-acre park meadow, the fireflies danced from dusk to twilight, exploring themes of childhood memory, introduced species, displacement, and digital communications.

Project made possible through grant funding from the 4Culture Tech Specific program and with the technical assistance of Benjamin VanDerPloeg. Video editing by Michael Matisse.

Russula brevipes mushroom spore prints on paper. Spores were deposited from 35-70 hours directly on paper. Fidelity of gill architectures and drifts are a result of proximity to paper, fine air currents, and tiny creatures who exited or entered during print making.
